Abstract

From January 1981 to December 1990, 20 patients were treated for non-Hodgkin's primary gastric malignant lymphoma. Fourth and fifth decades(60%) were predominant age distributions and the predominant symptom was upper abdominal pain(65%).
Upper gastrointestinal contrast studies and computer tomographic studies showed the submucosal tumor and the thickness of the gastric wall and suggested a malignant condition, but these findings were not specific for gastric lymphoma.
Gastroendoscopic
findings suggested more malignant conditions than the upper gastrointestinal contrast sutides and the abdominal computer tomographic studies, but yield for biopy was 85%.
The surgical resectability was 80%. All patients had postoperative adjuvant therapy. Eight had chemotherapy. Three had radiotherapy. Fifteen had a combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Mean survival period was 30 months and 5 year survival rate
was
27%. Those with tumors smaller than 7 centimeters had a survival time of 51 months versus 5 months for larger neoplasms.
We conclude that gastroendoscopy with biopsy is a most useful diagnostic method preoperatively although limited diagnostic study. If we suggest primary gastric lymphoma, we do actively gastroendoscopy with biopsy and can have a preoperative plan
of
expectant treatment resulting in getting good prognosis.
